Description

John Lyons (b. 1843 – d. 1925) was born September 18, 1843 in Danville, Kentucky and died April 2, 1925 at the Arizona Pioneers’ Home, Prescott, Arizona.

As a young man, he was an officer in the Confederate Army. He was a member of the quartet who carried the body of General Stonewall Jackson from the Chancellorsville battlefield, a major battle of the American Civil War and a huge victory for General Robert E. Lee in 1863.

John Lyons came to Arizona in 1878, settling in the Tucson area. He became a wealthy cattleman in Cochise County, extending his operations into Mexico. He became involved with the changing authorities during the transition days in Mexico and was arrested and imprisoned under the Carranza regime. He was rescued by Pancho Villa who had captured the town where John was imprisoned.

In his declining years, John was sent by Cochise County to be a guest of the state at the Arizona Pioneers’ Home.

In this photograph, John Lyons, or "Uncle Jim," is shown on the porch or balcony of the Arizona Pioneers' Home.
