Formal portrait of William "Will" S. Lowe. The front of the photograph has the handwritten note: “Will S L – to Angie.” The back of this photograph carries two handwritten notes: "W. S. Lowe at Salina, Kans. June 28th 1875" and “Third day out on journey of Callen Party – this man did not come to Arizona.”
William “Will” S. Lowe was a photographer in Saline County, Kansas. The Salina County Journal carries articles placing him there in the years 1874, 1875 and 1876. He seems to have been a traveling photographer for a period of time.
Also traveling with the “Grizzly” Callen Expedition was Angeline “Angie” (Mitchell) Brown (b. 1854 – d. 1909) and her parents, Daniel F. Mitchell, Sr. and Angeline (Brigham) Mitchell. They arrived in the Arizona Territory in 1875. Her father Daniel "Dan" Mitchell surveyed the town of Wickenburg, Arizona. Angie’s obituary indicates she was quite notable as a teacher of music and was one of the best musicians who came to the Arizona Territory. Angie lived in Prescott for a number of years, as well as Phoenix. Angie is memorialized in the Territorial Women’s Rose Garden (Sharlot Hall Museum), as is her mother, Angeline (Brigham) Mitchell.
