W. Porter and Group.
Handwriting on photograph reads: "J.M. McClane, H. Parker, E. Recum, W. Murch, W. Sears, W.W.Viguz, D. H. Burtis, G.C. Clark, W. Porter, Corrigan and J. Lewellyn.
In the photograph, the name Burtis is on the gilt counter with the cup on top.
Although unable to confirm all the identities of this group, the majority of names were found in Phoenix, Maricopa County, fitting the same time period and in Maricopa County.
Douglas Hume Burtis (1860-1934) was a member of the Phoenix Maricopa Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons. He married Edith Robbins on April 14, 1896 in Phoenix.
According to the National Register of Historic Places, Multiple Property Documentation Form, Section E, Page E. 7, Burtis became a leading businessman in Phoenix in the late 1880s. He was a plumber and tinware dealer, and he and the Coon brothers formed a partnership under the name Coon, Burtis and Coon that would become one of Phoenix's leading dealers in stoves, plumbing and hardware. Since the name BURTIS is prominent on the gilt counter, this could possibly be his hardware store.
After extensive research conducted by the Sharlot Hall Museum Research Center staff and volunteers, we cannot find any apparent connection between these individuals and the Prescott and Yavapai County area. However, if you have any information regarding this person, please contact the Library & Archives at archivesrequest@sharlothallmuseum.org.
