Desert prospector and his patient burro. Prospectors valued burros/mules for riding and for carrying their heavy provisions and equipment. These animals had a welcome, even temperament as well. Mules or burros were a hybrid animal, a result of breeding a male donkey with a female horse. After working for years, and past usable service, burros were usually 'retired' or released to run free. Many of the animals lingered around their former mines or mining towns. Children and townspeople enjoyed riding around on the friendler ones. A few of the "old timers" are still occasionally seen in the deserts of the Southwest. In the town of Oatman, AZ they are daily visitors to the downtown and a tourist attraction.
