Description

Rail cart tracks leading into a building at the Derby Mine, Iron Springs, Thumb Butte Mining District, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory, c. 1900's.

The Derby Mine was a gold mine located in Yavapai County, Arizona at an elevation of 6,440 feet. It was located near Iron Springs, Arizona, within the Thumb Butte Mining District, which is now part of the Prescott National Forest.

The property was initially owned and operated by the Madizelle Mining Company and consisted originally of 18 claims. The most well-known and worked claims, in addition to the Derby, were the Puritan and Italian claims.

The Derby Gold Mine operated as an underground mine, with a single shaft that spanned a depth of 500 feet and a total length of 5,000 feet. Its initial production commenced in 1905 and lasted until 1937. As mines go, the Derby produced a relatively small amount of gold.

The deposits of the Derby, Puritan and Italian mines were within a quartz vein that trended in a northwest direction and cut through Precambrian rocks; the Precambrian Era was the vast span of Earth's history, from its formation about 4.5 billion years ago to about 540 million years ago.

The ore extracted from the Derby consisted primarily of gold, with smaller amounts of silver and copper, along with bornite and chalcopyrite. The waste materials found within the mine included pyrite and quartz.
