Description

B&W postcard showing the United Verde Copper Company's Smelter, in Jerome, Yavapai County, Arizona. Up to 1915, Jerome had four blast furnaces and four converters, and they handled up to 400,000 tons of ore annually. As the demand for increased capacity and facilities for treating lower grade ores grew, so did the need for a close yet more favorable location for a plant and smelter. The topographic hazards and limitations of Jerome, with its caving and slipping ground, along with the difficulty of transporting shipments over its steep mountains, was why the bigger and more capable Clarkdale Smelter Yard was built and began operations on May 26, 1915. The rated capacity of the new plant was 4,500,000 pounds of copper per month.
