Description

Picket Post Mine, c. 1880s.

Written on back of this stereoscope print: “Picket Post is so-called from the fact of General Crook having established on its summit a picket post and signal station at the foot of ..?.. the Silver King Mill. Pinal County.”

History corrects some of the above statement, saying that General George Stoneman was responsible for establishing a post, signal station and military camp at the base of Picketpost Mountain in 1870. This military camp eventually grew into the town of Superior, Arizona.

The Silver King Mine was a silver and lead mine located in the Pioneer District of Pinal County, Arizona at an elevation of 3,638 feet. The mine also yielded secondary findings of copper, gold and zinc. The mine’s first year of production was 1877, and 1955 was its last year in operation.
