Overview of the Tombstone Consolidate Mining Company property, Cochise County, Tombstone, Arizona, c. 1880's.
The Emerald Mine was a silver, zinc, copper, and lead mine located within the historic Tombstone Mining District, Cochise county, Arizona at an elevation of 4,800 feet. The mine is no longer in operation. It was considered a medium size mine in terms of production output.
Operations at the Emerald Mine took place primarily underground, and utilized underground workings via shafts, adits and tunnels. The mine had nine levels. The ore extracted from the mine consisted of chalcocite, wulfenite, and galena. The main ore body, which was the concentration of valuable minerals inside the mine, extended over a length of 1,100 feet, and had a width of 10 feet. During its’ productive years, the Emerald produced one of the largest ore bodies in the District. Underground working was discontinued due to the intrusion of water.
