Hackberry Mine, Yavapai County, Arizona territory, c. 1890s.
The Hackberry Mine was a copper, zinc, lead, and gold mine located near Mayer, Yavapai County, Arizona within the Big Bug Mining District at an elevation of 4,701 feet. It is now part of the Prescott National Forest.
Previous owners of record included Fred Gibbs and the Golden Gate Mining Company. It was an underground mining operation with historical production dating from 1905 to 1956 and was considered to be a relatively small scale operation.
According to information posted on Thediggings.com “The mine operated primarily through underground workings, with a single known shaft. The maximum subsurface depth reached 274 meters (900 feet). The ore mined at Hackberry Mine is predominantly composed of chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, while the waste material mainly consists of calcite, quartz, and pyrite. The ore body itself takes on a lenticular or lens-shaped form, measuring approximately 182 meters (600 feet) in length, 274 meters (900 feet) in width, and 7 meters (24 feet) in thickness. The surrounding geological context in this area is characterized by chert formations that originated during the Proterozoic eon, between 2.50 and 0.54 billion years ago. Additionally, the geomorphology of the surrounding area is marked by the Mexican Highland of the Intermontane Plateaus.” (thediggings.com/mines/6088.)
Handwriting on back on the photograph says: "Hackberry Hoisting Works."
