The Galena Mine, one of the mining properties owned by the Mount Elliott Consolidated Mine Company.

The Galena and the Dividend mines were among the oldest mining properties in the Big Bug Mining District. It was one of a number of patented mining claims owned by the Mount Elliott Consolidated Mines Company. The mining company’s properties included a mill and an air compressor plant. Both the Galena and Dividend mines had good records as gold producers.

A Notice to Stockholders in the March 22, 1908, p. 38, edition of The Pittsburgh Press proclaimed the following:

“This mine consists of eleven patented properties, about 180 acres, developed by three shafts, one down nearly 300 feet, one nearly 400 feet and one over 60 feet, with levels and upraises run on the veins blocking out the ore: these are fissure veins and run from 2 feet to 17 feet in thickness, values assay from $13 to $150 per ton in gold and silver…This is a proven mine of great value and offered by practical and experienced mining men. This stock will sell at many times its present price.”

Handwriting on bottom edge of photograph says: “Mt. Elliott Con’d M. CO., Hoist House & Gallows Frame & Galena Shaft.”
