Description

Davis - Dunkirk Mine, Pine Grove District, Bradshaw Mountains, Crown King, Arizona Territory, c. 1885.  Photograph shows men and women posed outside the mine's shaft and outbuilding and handwriting on the photograph says: "Visitor's Day."

The Davis - Dunkirk mine was located in the Bradshaw Mountains, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory at an elevation of 7,201 feet. Its’ main commodities were gold and silver.

The mine was nestled on the western slope of the Bradshaw Mountains, near the head of Slate Creek. The main camp was at the mill, 14 miles east of Prescott, Arizona and 3 miles west of the Senator Highway.

The original ore-bearing veins were located in the late 1860's and early 1870's. In the book, Statistics of Mines and Mining in the States and Territories West of the Rocky Mountains, p. 347, Washington, 1874, R. W. Raymond stated that: “Seven and a half tons of ore from the Davis mine near Prescott have been shipped to San Francisco and yielded $618.75 or $88.50 per ton."

The property was obtained by Davis-Dunkirk Mines, Inc., in 1925. They built a new camp and a 120-ton flotation mill. Regular operations, which employed about twenty men, began in August, 1933, and yielded fifteen cars of concentrates up to January 10, 1934.

Eventually, workings on the Davis-Dunkirk property consisted of more than 6,000 feet of adits, raises, stopes, and winzes that were distributed over about four claim-lengths and with a vertical range of 1,600 feet.

According to H. L. Williams, the mine's manager at that time, the mill concentrates from this ore averaged about one ounce in gold and 62 ounces in silver per ton.
