Description

Buckhorn Mine, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory.

The Buckhorn Gold Mine was located in the vicinity of Peeples Valley, Arizona, within the Rich Hill Mining District. It was located at an elevation of 5,118 feet at the southern margin of the Weaver Mountains. The primary commodity mined was gold, along with secondary mining of copper, lead and silver.

This area was the site of significant historical importance in early mining activities. It was where, in the early 1860’s, Major A. H. Peeples, Captain Pauline Weaver, and others chanced to make camp at the base of Rich Hill. This hill contained a generous cache of loose gold nuggets, many underneath boulders and in crevices, and led to the discovery of nearby placers on Weaver and Antelope Creeks. These discoveries led to a surge of intense mining activity in the area. Once the easy prospecting ended, organized mining/mines took over.

The production of the Buckhorn Mine, along with others in the Rich Hill District, are estimated to have produced over $1,000,000 in gold prior to the 1880’s. The town of Weaver, on nearby Weaver Creek, was born and flourished until the late 1890’s. Present day, it is marked only by crumbling ruins.
