Description

Rigby Reduction Plant, north corner of Mayer, Arizona, on the Big Bug, ca. 1910. Note: The narrow gauge rails of the Bradshaw Mountain Railroad from the nearby Biggs Mine appear in the picture.

The Rigby Plant was situated on northern corner of Mayer, Arizona, in the Big Bug Mining District. T. John Rigby, was the president of the Rigby Reduction plant. He was responsible for the installation and financing of the large amount of machinery necessary to build and put the plant in operation. The cost of the construction at the time, 1906, was over $200,000.

The Rigby Plant processed siliceous ores, predominate in the Big Bug area, through a process known as the “Pohle-Crosdale” process. It was a specialized treatment which promised greater results and fewer occurrences of unwanted by-products such as zinc.

According to an Arizona Journal-Miner article of July 7, 1906, ores could be “unloaded from the cars on a spur from the Bradshaw Mountain railroad on a platform at the rock crushers of the mill, after which very little, if any, handling is necessary” because the plant was intended to operate “as automatic as possible.”
