Distant view of the United Verde Copper Company smelter in Clarkdale, Arizona. The smelter was located 4 1/2 miles from the Company's United Verde Mine at Jerome, Arizona. The matte from all the United Verde's mines was transported to the smelter for processing or "roasting" through the 2 1/2 mile long Hopewell Tunnel. The Clarkdale plant was equipped with four blast furnaces, when first constructed in 1915, and later included three reverberatory furnaces as well. Blast furnaces were of primary importance in the production of raw matte. Reverberatory furnaces were used mainly for treatment of fine ore and flue dust. In its' heyday, the mine and smelter employed crews of up to 1100 men. The mine's main ore was high grade copper. Gold and silver, found within the mine as well, were said to pay the entire cost of the operation's production. The mine was once owned by W. A. Clark, an ex-United States Senator of Montana, and for whom the town of Clarkdale was named. It was later acquired by the Phelps Dodge Corporation.
