Description

Havasupai woman with a baby in a cradleboard.

Havasupai parents bind their infants snugly into cradleboards until the age of 4 to 6 months. The cradleboard has a hoop that surrounds the infant’s head with flexible woven wands. Parents and older sisters take an infant in its cradleboard everywhere with them. The sensation of physical envelopment placates the swaddled infant, and it seldom complains even after the better part of the day. By 7 months, most parents remove the infant from the cradleboard for good.
