Description

Exterior of the Aztlan Mill, Groom Creek, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory.

Handwriting on the back of the photograph says: "Aztlan Mill on Groom Creek - for silver. Six miles from Prescott. Burned July 18, 1879. Rebuilt by R. J. Cartmell, April 1885. Formerly on the Sterling and moved to Groom Creek about 1876." The August 7, 1889 edition of the Arizona Weekly Journal Miner described Mr, Cartmell as a mine speculator, saying: "R. J. Cartmell came in from Lynx Creek last evening, where he is engaged in developing a mining claim."

Aztlan Mill was a ten-stamp quartz mill. One of the mines it served was the successful Peck Mine in the Bradshaw Mining District. The town of Alexandra was founded due to the Peck Mine. The Aztlan handled the worked ore by both mill and furnace processes. However, the distance between the Peck Mine and the Aztlan Mill was some 35 miles over rugged mountain terrain. It was very tedious and expensive. The Mine's ownership was also plagued with litigation problems that eventually closed it down. Present day, nothing remains of the former mining camp nor mill.
