Miners at work in the Poland Mine, Yavapai County, Arizona. Rock drills were especially adapted for quarrying and mining, and were used by many of the largest mining firms engaged in such work. The Ingersoll Rock Drill Company manufactured the best rock drills; they were noted for their durability, light weight, and portability. These drills were supported on a tripod so that ordinary workman could operate them efficiently. Two persons could easily handle and carry these drills, which was extremely essential in mines. Rock drills were adjustable; the machine could be conveniently placed in multiple positions for boring holes at any angle. These underground drills were powered by compressed air; this power source not only drove the drill bit, it also helped cool the air inside the mine, thereby giving the workmen substantial comfort and fresh air. The compressor was usually located near the mouth of the shaft or tunnel, and pipes were laid to reach the drilling work.
