Description

Prospect Mine; ore hoisted by windlass and bucket.

The location of the Prospect Mine was the Hassayampa District. A claim was filed on it by misters George Burton and A.C. Burmister on 8/22/1893.

Windlass and buckets were rudimentary structures used in early gold mining retrieval efforts. A windlass structure consisted of a horizontal cylinder or barrel which was rotated by turning a crank or belt. A winch was connected to one or both ends, and a cable or rope wound around it, was used to pull a weight attached to the opposite end. In this way, heavy buckets of dirt and ore could be hauled to the surface from deep horizontal mine shafts.
