Bagdad Mine trucks. In 1945, mining began to transition from the earlier block-caving process to open pit mining. Ore was dug up by huge shovels and then hauled by equally huge trucks. By early 1947, a pit crusher system, glory-hole orebin, and conveyor system to carry crushed ore from the pit to the mill had been installed. Since 1948, all ore from the Bagdad Mine has come from open pit operations. In the present day, trucks carry low-grade oxide ore to the downstream side of a tailing dam to be acid-leached at a future date. Trucks also carry barren waste (mostly Gila conglomerate overburden) to a waste disposal area northeast of the pit. When truck pitting began, Bagdad cut its mining costs by 40 percent, and more than doubled production.
