Description

Hoist House Interior, United Verde Copper Company.

Drum hoists were used to lower men and supplies deep into mines, and to raise ore back out. Hoist machinery was assembled in place and many of the parts were enormous. The machinery required large underground chambers hundreds or thousands of feet below the surface which housed the important infrastructure and facilities needed to service a mine’s ore production. Storage facilities, repair shops, blacksmiths and other support services could be found in the hoist houses deep within the mines. Screen conveyors would carry the resulting bulk ore and materials for further processing in an adjacent mill or for haulage to a more distant processing location.
