Description

Ore cars or carts were an essential part of early mines in Arizona and other States in the late 1800's. The earliest cars were man-powered. They were made of cast iron with curved spoke wheels for strength. A simple retention-rod on the car front dug into the mine tunnel floor to help keep it on course. As the technology evolved, narrow tracks were placed and cars were often pulled by mules or horses; much later, they were powered/pulled by small gas or electric motors. Later ore car designs featured "scoops" that allowed them to tilt and dump their load instead of having to shovel it over their sides. Foot-operated controls and the ability to turn 360 degrees to dump their contents became standard. Ore cars were also modified for other uses, some were used for delivering food and supplies, while others served as "port-a-potties," for the sanitary needs of the miners working inside the mine shafts.
