Description

This photo shows Gail Gardner (left) and western artist George Phippen (right) enjoying their conversation.

George Phippen was born July 11, 1915 in Iowa/died April 13, 1966 in Prescott, Arizona. Early in his childhood, his family moved to Kansas and he was raised on old-timers’ stories. In 1947, he made his home and studio in Prescott and later establishing another studio in Skull Valley, Arizona. In 1952, his fame began at Brown & Bigelow, producers of calendars. Initially fifteen of his paintings were reproduced. Phippen became a successful commercial artist and illustrator. He executed approximately 3,000 works. He was commissioned in 1962 to do the artwork for The Alamo, a movie produced by John Wayne. Among his other activities, he founded Bear Paw Bronze Works in 1965 and was one of the four founding members of the Cowboy Artists of America, serving as the organization's first president.  The Phippen Museum is named in his honor and is located in Prescott.
