Description

This is a formal portrait of General George Crook (b. 1829 - d. 1890) who was a military commander of the Southwest region during the Apache Tribe uprisings.  From 1871 Crook served in Arizona against the Apaches, becoming a Brigadier General in 1873. 

General George Crook was born on September 8, 1828, near Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1852 and served as Second Lieutenant in the 4th Infantry in California.  He fought in the Civil War with the 36th Ohio Infantry. He was married to Mary Dailey; they had no children. In 1872, he was assigned the Arizona command to quell the Apache Tribes disturbances and went on to have a reputation as a Indian fighter. He was also responsible for putting processes in place to make the Apache tribes self-sufficient.  Crook died on March 21, 1890 in Chicago, Illinois.
