Description

Celia Barker Williams called  “Barkie” or “Barky” (b. 1877 - d. 1976) was born September 29, 1877 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and died March 3, 1976 at the Marcus J. Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Cottonwood, Arizona now known as the Verde Valley Medical Center. She was the daughter of Mark and Katerine Barker, immigrants to Canada from England and Scotland respectively.

Barkie started her nurse’s training at Hamilton, then moved to Los Angeles where she completed her training in 1904 (or 1903). In 1918 she came by narrow gauge railway to Clarkdale, Arizona with her brother Mark and his family.

She first lived in Jerome, Arizona. In 1930 she married George Wyne Williams and moved to Cottonwood, Arizona. Later she went to work as a nurse for the United Verde Mines at the Clarkdale smelter plant. She was known and loved throughout the Verde Valley and was somewhat of a living legend. In this photograph she is shown in her mother’s hat and gown that are circa 1880s.
