Description

George H. Stevens (b.1844 - d.unknown) was born in Massachusetts in 1844. Parents unknown.

The Honorable George Stevens was known as the father of Graham County, Arizona. He was highly regarded and thought to be honest and generous. The 1870 US Census records him as being at Camp Goodwin in Pima, AZ where he was a military expressman, dealing with baggage and being a wagoneer. He held the offices of County Recorder and Clerk of the District Court. He was known as "Little Steve". George was the first Sheriff of Coconino County. Later, he was a member of the Territorial Board of Prison Commissioners. He was indicted for misconduct, stealing $10,000 of prison funds and left the country to avoid prosecution. He spent time in South America and then opened a saloon and gambling house in Victoria, B.C.

He married Eloisa Michelena in Graham County on January 1, 1884.
