Jules Baumann (b.1853 - d.1929) was born in Chur, Switzerland on February 25, 1853. His father was born in Switzerland but no other information found about his parents. Originally from Switzerland, he arrived in Prescott, Arizona from New York in 1879. A cousin, Daniel Hatz, had been a member of the Walker Party and was in the Prescott hotel and restaurant business in Prescott, He encouraged Jules to join him, which he did. Daniel became a naturalized citizen in Prescott on September 18, 1890.
Jules managed Prescott's first candy factory and first ice cream parlor and was the city's first civilian bandmaster. He was also an artist and draughtsman. Lithograph copies of his painting of the Grand Canyon were sold widely and he created an 1891 plat of Prescott done in color that showed all of the businesses and dwelling houses at that time. In his later years, he turned to mining and established the Baumann Copper Co. which held extensive property near Humboldt, Arizona.
Jules married Loretta Morena in Prescott on November 30, 1902. She was possibly his second wife.
Handwriting on the back of photograph reads: "Front seat-Howard, run the old Opera House in Head Hotel, Jules Baumann, Bessie Bauman (back seat), Mrs. Baumann".
Jules died on November 17, 1929 in Prescott.
Burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott.
At his death, he was survived by his widow, a step-daughter, Mrs. William Schneider, postmistress at Humboldt, and a step-son.
