Description

Jessie Benton Frémont (b. 1824 - d. 1902) at her home in Los Angeles, California. She was the daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. In 1841 she married John Charles Frémont (b. 1813 - d. 1890), an American military officer, explorer, and in 1856 was the first Republican nominee for President of the United States. John C. Fremont also served as Governor of Arizona Territory from 1878 to 1881. Jessie published over fifty stories, articles, and essays in the late nineteenth century and knew prominent literary figures of that era. Photo Courtesy of C.
