Built in 1877 as a prime example of Victorian architecture favored by the wealthier settlers of the Arizona Territory, the Bashford House was originally located at 403 E. Gurley Street. It was bought by William C. Bashford, son of Coles Bashford, and his wife, Mary Louise Evans Bashford, from owner Samuel Baker in January, 1878, for $2,000. The original home was a simple two-story structure, rectangular in shape with an outside staircase. Over the next ten years the couple drastically remodeled and enlarged the house. Succeeding owners also made extensive changes, and in the late 1920s, the home was converted into several apartments. In 1972 Purina Ralston, owner of Jack-in-the-Box, planned to purchase the real estate and demolish the building. The owner offered the house to Sharlot Hall Museum provided that the Historical Society move it. The citizens of Prescott raised $25,000 to cover the costs of the move and renovations. In April, 1974, the house was moved to its current site on the grounds of Sharlot Hall Museum.
