Description

Seated: Andrew Whitney and his daughter Julia Colan. Standing right to left: Tyla Beck, Albio Beck, and Irma Beck. Back of photo reads, "Four Generations" (of Whitneys).

Andrew D. Whitney (b. 1833 – d. 1929) was born February 25, 1833 in Phillips, Franklin, Maine and died August 12, 1929 in Jackson, Oregon. He is buried in Ashland, Jackson, Oregon. He was the son of Samuel L. Whitney (b. 1799 - d. 1864) and Delinda S. Howard (b. 1806 – d. 1880). Census data shows the following. In 1850, he was living in Delavan, Walworth, Wisconsin with his parents and siblings. In 1860, he was living in Greenfield, Monroe, Wisconsin and was married to Julia Whitney and had two children: Julia (b. 1855 or 1856 – d. unknown) and Edward (or Erwin) (b. 1858 – d. unknown). Military pension records indicate that Andrew served in the Civil War.

By 1870, he was living in Lincoln, Monroe, Wisconsin with his second wife, Lucy Elizabeth Robinson (b. 1846 – d. 1921) whom he married on December 16, 1867 in Tomah, Monroe, Wisconsin. In 1900, he and Lucy were living in Meyer Precinct, Yavapai, Arizona Territory and their son Edward (or Edwin) was living with them. In both the 1910 Census and the 1920 Census, he was living in Mayer, Yavapai, Arizona with his wife Lucy. It appears that they farmed a fruit ranch. On November 26, 1920 he and Lucy moved into the Arizona Pioneers’ Home in Prescott, Arizona. Lucy Whitney’s obituary (Weekly Journal-Miner, Wednesday morning, October 26, 1921) indicates that she died at the Arizona Pioneers’ Home October 22, 1921. She was born April 4, 1846 in Knox County, Missouri. She and Andrew arrived in Phoenix in 1882.  It is assumed that Tyla is Julia’s daughter, that she married Albio Beck and that Irma is their daughter. At the time of this 1926 photograph, Andrew’s wife, Lucy, was deceased.
