Walter Duncan Advertisement
Walter Hurley Duncan(b. 1889 - d. 1965) lived in Adamsville, Tennessee before he served his country in World War I. He returned home with tuberculosis and doctors recommended a move to Arizona. He came to Prescott in 1920 and convalesced at the Whipple Veterans Hospital, after which he had trouble finding work. In May of 1921, he witnessed an aborted attempt to jump across the Grand Canyon. He spontaneously annoucned to all the onlookers, newsmen, and cameramen that he would jump the Canyon. It was a 1000 foot chasm, with a 16 foot span. While he received no money for the jump, the publicity led to good job offers, including one as wholesale news dealer, representing the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette from 1922 until he retired. He marrid Evelyn Marie Stevens who was from Nova Scotia. She was a billing clerk. He lived in Prescott until his death.
