Description

John Harry Carpenter - J. H. (b. 1854 – d. 1905) was born December 19, 1854 In New York City. In 1873 he came west and settled in San Francisco. For several years there, he held a responsible position with the Merchants Exchange. In 1878 he married and came to the Arizona Territory. He settled in Prescott, Arizona, where his wife died. Widely regarded, he was identified with the political and business affairs of the territory.  He resided in Prescott for a number of years and was connected with the various legislatures that met there, holding the position of chief clerk of the council.

He later moved to Yuma and represented that county in the legislature, being Speaker of the Eighteen Legislative Assembly (January 21, 1895-March 21, 1895) and a member of the council of the Nineteenth Assembly (January 18, 1897-March 18, 1897).  In later years he conducted a mining and real estate office at Yuma. He represented W. C. Greene, a copper magnate, and made for him some important investments in Yuma county real estate including the Rawlings pumping plant.

The Hon. J. H. Carpenter died December 27, 1905 in Yuma, Arizona. He was also known as "Carp" by intimates. The Elks were in charge of funeral arrangements.
