Description

This photo shows the 1953-1954 construction of the modern Hell Canyon Bridge near Drake, Arizona. The image was part of a photo album for Fred D. Schemmer, a resident of Prescott, Arizona and member of the Arizona Highway Commission.

Hell Canyon is a tributary of the Verde River. The bridge is located on the 35th parallel, which was used by early travelers, including Indians, missionaries and trappers. In 1851, Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves' survey team came closest to the site of the current bridge.
