Description

This image shows from left to right the Yavapai Club on the corner of Gurley and Marina Streets, Carnegie Library, and Elks Opera House on Gurley Street in Prescott, Arizona.

The Carnegie Library was dedicated in November 1903 almost two years after Julia Goldwater, President of the Library Board, sent a floor plan and photos of the proposed library to the Carnegie Foundation in 1901.

The Elks Opera House was built next to the library a year later. The Prescott Elks, BPOE Lodge #330, purchased the property upon which the Elks Opera House is located in 1900 and selected John R. Minor as the architect of the Elks Building.  The granite cornerstone was laid on April 3, 1904, followed by the grand opening on February 20, 1905. The 1910 film "Birth of A Nation" was shown here on May 15, 1916. Between 1915 and 1982 the opera house primarily served as a movie theater with occasional live acts.
