Description

Cyanide Plant, Congress, Arizona Territory, c. 1890.

Handwriting on the photo reads: "Cyanide Plant at Congress, Arizona."

As free milling ores grew scare, simple ore processing techniques gave way to more complex ones, especially in regard to sulfides; many milling techniques either did not work or were too costly or time consuming.

In its' basic application, a cyanide solution was sprayed or or introduced into large vats or outdoor “heaps” or "slums" (as in heap leach piles) of finely crushed ores so that they could dissolve. Chemical combinations were then devised and set up to release the gold from the 'pregnant' cyanide solution.

In mining today, flotation and cyanidation are still commonly used in ore mills to process rough ore-bearing slag.
