Yavapai Chiefs mounted on horseback at Camp Verde, Arizona. Yavapais called their leader "Bamulva". He was "Mastava" meaning "not afraid". Usually a family head who was also a veteran warrior became a Yavapai leader. He was asked to settle disputes and determine when and where to move the band. The U.S. Army selected "chiefs" to serve as scouts. Though some "chiefs" were "Bamulva", acknowledged by their people, many were not.
The Yavapai Tribe has a rich history dating back centuries in central and western Arizona, when the women wove intricate baskets and men were largely hunters and gatherers. There are three primary groups of Yavapai existing today, located at Fort McDowell, Camp Verde and Prescott.
