Description

Photo of the plaque at the LaGuardia Bridge named in honor of New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who visited Prescott in April 1935 and September 1938 with his wife, Marie.

In 1990 construction began on the LaGuardia Bridge as part of the Whipple/Third Street project. Spanning 375 feet across Granite Creek at what is now A.C. Williams Granite Creek Park, the new bridge was the longest built within city limits. That June, the City of Prescott approved having the bridge dedicated to LaGuardia and a plaque installed. On August 15, 1990, The Prescott Courier reported that the final steel beam had been placed for the bridge and that the project was scheduled for completion in January 1991. Prominent community leader Lester "Budge" Ruffner reported in the November 29, 1990 Prescott Courier that a dedication ceremony was scheduled for early spring.

On February 11, 1991 the LaGuardia Bridge opened to traffic. Unfortunately due to a snowstorm the ceremony dedicating the bridge was postponed until April 13, 1991.  A dedication ceremony on April 14, 1991 unveiled the bridge plaque under clear skies.
