Description

Major J. L. Wharton (b.1845 - d.1920) was born in Ohio in 1845. His full name was James L. Wharton. His father was John Wharton, born in Ohio in1820, and his mother was Sarah (Cowan) Wharton, born in Maryland. 

He was the father-in-law of Fred Seward, the son of William Seward who was the Secretary of State in the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

Handwriting on photograph reads: "Major Wharton, U.S.A."

Major Wharton served in the Union Army in Company A Fifth Kentucky Cavalry during the Civil War.

Major Wharton died on January 8, 1920 in Johnson City, Tennessee. At the time of his death he was a resident of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Tennessee and was buried at the National Soldiers Home in Tennessee.
