Description

Daniel Hatz (b. 1831 – d. 1925) was born October 21, 1831 in Chur, Graubunden, Switzerland. His parents, Daniel Hatz (b. 1802 -  d. 1875) and Maria Hitz (b. 1816), were both from Switzerland. In 1851 with his parents, he immigrated to the United States as a young lad. He arrived in Prescott, Arizona in 1864 and made Prescott his permanent home.

He married Catherine Sarah Shanberger (b. 1852 – d. 1925) in 1876 (est.). They had three children: Violet (b. March 1877), Bessie (b. June 1879) and Albert (b. February 1883). The 1880 Census lists his occupation as baker and hotelkeeper. The 1900 census lists his father-in-law, John Schanberger, as living with the family and that his wife and all three children were living in the home.

His obituary states that he was a pioneer hotel man in Prescott.  He was the proprietor of the Pioneer hotel on South Montezuma, one of the first ever erected in Prescott. He became a naturalized American citizen in Prescott.

Daniel was one of the first members of the Masonic lodge in Prescott and was a member of the Christian Science Church. He died November 10, 1925 just two months after his wife’s death. His home was at 111 South Mount Vernon in Prescott. All three of his children survived him.  Albert and one daughter, Mrs. B. H. Bork, both lived in Prescott. His other daughter, Mrs. W. G. Gimmer, lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Six grandchildren also survived.
