Poland Mine tunnel, Walker Mining District, Yavapai County, Arizona.
Pictured are two miners operating an underground winch that was powered by a steam generator located at the surface.
The Poland Mining Company, responsible for Poland’s growth at the turn of the century, operated the Poland-Lynx Creek Tunnel. It was the largest mining tunnel in the area. The tunnel was a honeycomb of shafts, drifts, and stopes, and penetrated 8,071 feet through the divide between Big Bug and Lynx Creeks. It connected the rich mining operations at Walker with the rail head and mill at Poland. The tunnel included intricate hoisting works and was considered one of the wonders of the mining world.
