Howell Smelter, Lynx Creek, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory, c. 1883.
The Howell Smelter was located in the upper Lynx Creek, Big Bug mining area. The originator, John Howell, started the Howell Smelting & Mining Co., as a large eastern firm of investors. They built up the property to reduce ore from claims active in the surrounding area, i.e., the Hackberry mine, Pine Mountain mine, and others. The area was also home to the Adams store, a small dry goods store set-up to supply the camp’s needs.
Mr. Howell was several times a millionaire from his earlier owning and working the Broken Hill silver mines in Australia. However, unlike his previous ventures, the Howell enterprise failed, the property, smelter and store, went up for auction numerous times, and passed through various owners, and had varying, small returns from the 1880's until the mid-1950's.
