Sluice Box Workers, Yavapai County, Jerome, Arizona Territory.
Handwriting on the back of this photograph says: “Precipitating copper, Jerome, Arizona.”
In sluicing or hydraulic methods, a slightly sloped wooden trough called a “box sluice,” or a ditch cut in hard gravel or rock called a “ground sluice,” was used as a channel along which gold-bearing gravel was carried by a stream of water.
Nineteenth century gold miners used wooden sluices that were 12 feet or longer. Modern gold and other minerals’ prospectors use much shorter sluice boxes. Sluice boxes are now made of plastic or metal which are typically 24, 36 or 48 inches long and 6 to 10 inches wide.
A sluice box is typically set at a 5 to 12 degree angle ideally, with a common starting point being a 1-inch drop per foot of sluice box length. However, the ideal angle can vary based on factors such as water flow, material being processed, and riffle design.
