Description

Ethyl R. Paine (b. 1871 - d. 1915) was born June 2, 1871 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Robert and Sarah A. (Mason) Matthewson.

In this photograph she is shown with a group of women and two children. Names for the following are handwritten on the back of the photograph. Left to right/Top Row: 3. Mrs. Frank Payne; 5. Mrs. Harris; 7. Mrs. Hartsfield; 9. Mrs. Piper; 11. Mrs. Otis; 12. Mrs. Scott.  Middle Row: 4. Mary (Otis) Blake.  Children: Junita Chute.

The 1910 census shows that Ethyl was married to Frank C. Paine (b. 1860 - d. 1929) who was born in Massachuetts. They were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico September 16, 1897 (Arizona Weekly Journal-Miner, September 15, 1897).

At the time of the 1910 Census they were living in Prescott, Arizona and three sons are listed: Elbert  Paine, age 20; Mason Paine, age 11; and Frank Crosby Paine, (b. 1902 - d. 1930) age 8; all were born in Arizona.  Both her husband  and her son Crosby are buried in Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. Ethyl Paine died March 4, 1915 in Prescott.

In a Prescott Evening Courier article dated January 29, 1929, Frank Paine is listed as being deceased at age 70; that he was the "Prescott taxi man"; that he had spent the past 40 years living in Prescott; that his son Crosby Paine was living in Prescott; and that his son, Dr. Mason Payne, was a dentist living in Los Angeles, California.

A Weekly Journal-Miner issue dated June 23, 1915 indicates a petition of Frank C. Paine for letters of administration in the estate of Ethyl R. Paine, deceased and names the husband, Frank C. Paine, and two children, Mascon C. Paine and F. Crosby Paine as heirs. An Arizona Republican article (March 14, 1915) references a regular weekly meeting of the Woman's Christian Termperance Union as announcing the passing of Mrs. Ethyl Paine, recording secretary of the state W. C. T. U.

Note: In some references the spelling of the last name is Paine or Payne and the spelling of her first name is either Ethyl or Ethel.
