William “Billy” Harold Stephens (b. February 15, 1906 – d. December 15, 1945) was the son of William T. Stephens and Frances Virginia Wingfield. The Wingfield family of Virginia came to the Verde Valley in 1875. Henry Wingfield’s (b. 1848 - d. 1926) son, Clinton DeWitt Wingfield (b. 1871 - d. 1899) bought William “Boss” Head’s store in 1898. After his untimely death, the store was run for nearly 50 years by Frances Wingfield’s brother, Robert Wilson Wingfield, who was William’s uncle. William died in Luzon in the Philippines shortly after World War II ended. He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery.
